'Drop the Beat': Finding hip hop fame

Ron Hernandez has had his own public access show, 'Drop the Beat,' since 1991. The hip hop show airs at midnight Mondays and Wednesdays at Time Warner Cable channel 20.

San Antonio might be the home of Tejano music, but one local resident is doing what he can to bring attention to another popular form of music.

Ron Hernandez has brought San Antonio hip hop and rap fans a taste of that musical genre through a locally produced music video show featuring top artists and up-and-comers in urban music.

Known to viewers as Rocket Ron, Hernandez started "Drop the Beat" while he was a film student at San Antonio College. Despite a brief hiatus from the airwaves, the public access show, which Hernandez used to host and still executive produces, has been on local airwaves since 1991.

Hernandez, a product of San Antonio's West Side, says his commitment to the local music scene, as well as his growing connections in the industry, shows that humble beginnings don't have to be a roadblock to success.

"I've been able to meet some of the top names in the industry," says Hernandez, who counts Chingo Bling, Eminem and the late rappers Eazy-E and The Notorious B.I.G. among those he's interviewed for his show.

"Here I am a kid from the West Side and I'm traveling all over the country for this show," says the producer and promoter who seems to work just as hard to promote "Drop the Beat" and get the show more sponsors.

One of the tools Hernandez uses to promote his show is a bright red Dodge Neon decorated with the "Drop the Beat" logo. The car is used at local events for tapings aired on the show, which has been honored by the Billboard Music Video Awards with three nominations for "Best Local/Regional Show."

"I just want to bring more attention to the hip hop scene and do a quality show," Hernandez says of the goals by which he measures his success. "There's always more to do."

During Hurricane Ike

Austin, Texas (November XX, 2008) — In light of the recent devastation

in Galveston, The Recording Academy® Texas Chapter will be holding

GRAMMY® Giving To The Gulf sponsored by Gibson Guitars to replace music

equipment and instruments lost due to Hurricane Ike at Galveston’s

Central Middle School. The Texas Chapter will hold a statewide donation

drive for musical equipment, instruments and cash donations. The drive

will kick-off at the membership's Latin GRAMMY® Celebration in Houston

at House of Blues, with all proceeds from the event going to these

efforts. Donation drives will also be held in Dallas, San Antonio and

Austin to collect instruments and have them refurbished before

distributing to the school.

"When we heard that Galveston's Central Middle School lost all their

music equipment to Hurricane Ike, we knew that it would be our mission

to help," said Theresa Jenkins, Executive Director of the Texas Chapter.

"Putting instruments back into the students' hands is a big part of the

recovery and healing process for this community.

Three additional locations will be taking donations of instruments and

they can be dropped off at the following drive locations:

Hello Everyone:

ACTN is partnering with the City of San Antonio Housing and Neighborhood Services Department, and Spurs Sports and Entertainment, to hold the 2008 Good Neighbor Initiative. It will be this Saturday, November 8th from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The initiative will focus on providing house painting and landscape services (limb cutting, cleaning yards, planting) for properties from Rio Grande to Onslow and from Gorman to Gulf Street.

The Spurs are recruiting volunteers from the community, and providing funding for tools/supplies/materials. A yet to be identified Spurs player will be in attendance. The City will purchase materials, secure contractors to supervise the projects, provide security and brush collection service.

The Spurs and the City have asked ACTN to help with securing volunteers from the local community. Our goal is to contribute 20 volunteers to the project. The Spurs are hoping to involve more than 200 volunteers from numerous groups.

I think it is important for members of the community to have a presence at this project, to show that we care about our own community. I am asking each of you to assist us with identifying volunteers that will join us on Saturday. We will be assembling at Tynan Elementary, 925 Gulf Street, beginning at 12 noon.

Whatever time that can be given on Saturday would be greatly appreciated. Please have volunteers call the ACTN office at (210) 212-2286 to confirm their attendance.

Officials said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane hurtled off the end of a runway and crashed through antennas and a fence. It came to rest on an embankment across a five-lane highway and was engulfed in flames, said Debbie Hersman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were in critical condition at a burn center in Augusta, Ga., about 75 miles southwest of Columbia, hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said.

Two other passengers — Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, Calif., and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles — died, as did pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, according to the county coroner. Baker was an assistant to Barker and Still was a security guard for the musician.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Hours after performing for thousands of South Carolina college students, former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity DJ AM were critically injured in a fiery Learjet crash that killed four people, authorities said Saturday.

Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were in critical condition at a burn center in Augusta, Ga., about 75 miles southwest of Columbia, hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said.

The plane was headed for Van Nuys, Calif. It is owned by Global Exec Aviation, a California-based charter company, and was certified to operate last year, Hersman said. The company said it had no immediate comment.

At the crash site Saturday, the air was still heavy with the odor of jet fuel. A trail of black soot led off a runway. The nose of the aircraft was gone and the roof was missing from two-thirds of the charred plane.

"It's absolutely terrible and tragic," Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

Barker and Goldstein had performed together under the name TRVSDJ-AM at a free concert in Columbia on Friday night. Event sponsor T-Mobile said their hourlong set ended at about 7:15 p.m.

The show, which included performances by former Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell and singer Gavin DeGraw, drew 10,000 people into the streets of Five Points, the neighborhood near the University of South Carolina, Coble said.

Peter Kastis, Farrell's manager, said he and Farrell didn't find out about the crash until they arrived at the airport Saturday morning to find it closed.

"I just hugged them hello less than 24 hours ago. I wish I could hug them now," Kastis said.

One concertgoer said TRVSDJ-AM's performance was unique and different.

"It was literally one of the best shows I've ever seen," said Brett Flashnick, a freelance photographer who works for The Associated Press and attended the concert for a local newspaper.

Barker, 32, was one of the more colorful members of the multiplatinum-selling punk rock band Blink-182, whose biggest album was 1999's CD "Enema of the State," which sold more than five million copies in the United States alone.

After Blink-182 disbanded in 2005, Barker went on to form the rock band ( 44) — pronounced "plus forty-four." He also starred in the MTV reality series "Meet the Barkers" with former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, to whom he was married at the time. The show documented the former couple's lavish wedding and life. Their later split, reconciliation and subsequent break up made them tabloid favorites.

Goldstein is a popular DJ for hire who at one time was engaged to Nicole Richie.

He spun a mix of hip-hop and dance beats for the hottest nightclubs and had a string of dates set up for the next few weeks. He reached the peak of his celebrity perhaps during his highly publicized romance with Richie a few years ago.

DJ AM also dated singer/actress Mandy Moore, and while he became a gossip favorite for his romances, he drew respect from music aficionados for his DJ skills.

Barker and Goldstein performed as part of the house band at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month.

Sitting in the back of Supafly Streetwear, an urban clothing and music shop on Ingram Road, local rapper Fade Dogg doesn’t mince words when asked about San Antonio’s urban music scene. “Radio stations are a bunch of bulls**t,” he said. Local artists get minimal airplay compared with their counterparts in other cities, Fade Dogg said. And, what’s more, the scene here is hindered by rivalries among local artists.

“Everybody cannot be happy for nothing, for nobody. Somebody else hits that other step on that ladder, and that motherf**ker a couple steps down is straight hating on them. We just need to come together and blow this bitch up.”

With the globalization of hip-hop and rap more than two decades in the rearview mirror, the San Antonio urban music scene has not produced a nationally recognized star and is not considered an urban music center like other cities such as Houston, Dallas, New Orleans and Atlanta.

There are a multitude of reasons why San Antonio has not yet emerged, said Chuk Jones, publisher of S.A. Urban News. But he believes the lack of mainstream radio support and a unique San Antonio sound are among the most important factors that prevent the city from making its presence known on the national scene.

“We have always said and we have always seen that the local radio stations here do not really support local artists in the way that they should, in our opinion.” Jones also said, however, that artists tend to copy what is happening elsewhere. “Right now, San Antonio does not have a unique sound in the hip-hop and rap genre because a lot of the artists hear a sound from Houston or they hear a sound from California, and they see that’s getting big, and they want to mimic that.”

In August, The Beat hosted its third annual Beat Bash. The concert featured established and up-and-coming artists from across the nation. Only one local artist was featured on the bill.

Eric Sean, program director at the Cox Radio-owned Power 106.7, has worked in several large markets in the United States, including Los Angeles, and said that his station is not opposed to playing local urban music. He said he just hasn’t found a lot of music in San Antonio that he feels is good enough to put into regular rotation.

“We just haven’t found anything to the caliber of what we’re kind of looking for,” Sean said. “As far as San Antonio stuff, we haven’t really found an artist that stands out, that could draw an appeal to the masses.”

Sean agrees with Fade Dogg, however, and said that local artists do not support each other here like they do in other cities including Houston and Dallas.

“Here, it’s like everyone tries to jump in front of the line, and no one looks back. It’s like it’s ‘me, me, me, me,’ and it’s not San Antonio,” Sean said.

Even so, local insiders say the scene made some progress in the past couple of years. Evidence of this includes local artist Question? signing a four-album deal with Sony/Epic Records. Add that to the fact that S.A.’s Famous also has been signed to Chamillionaire’s label, and local record stores say they’re selling more local urban music today than they did five or 10 years ago because of customer demand.

“I think we are selling more local music because the local radio stations are playing the same old sh*t,” Roman Cuellar, music buyer for Flip Side Record Parlor, said. He added that he’s likely to stock more Fade Dogg records than those of Chamillionaire and other nationally known artists. “People are looking for something different, and San Antonio artists have really stepped up over the past couple of years in that regard.”

Other insiders say there’s evidence of growth in the number of artists in the city. Local rapper Kyle Lee said the scene was nonexistent when he landed here in the late 1990s on a University of the Incarnate Word basketball scholarship. Now, he said, there are more than 200 artists working and making music.

“There was never any local groups performing in town in 1998. And if there was a local group performing, it was because they put their own money together and threw their own show. It wasn’t because they got booked,” Lee said. “I guess you could say (the scene) was dead, and you know, for the last 10 years we’ve been reviving it. Well, I guess it was never dead. It just wasn’t born yet here.”

Promoter Ken Lewis echoes Lee’s comment. The president and founder of Bubble-Rap Inc. said he rarely booked gigs in 2004 and 2005 for local artists in San Antonio venues. Today, he says he books shows for about 40 artists a week.

“It’s very simple. Money, money,” he said. “Looking back to 2004 to now, it’s (urban music) everywhere. So all the bars and clubs are picking it up because they do make money.”

Additionally, S.A. Urban News was created three years ago and provides a monthly look at urban culture in San Antonio. The publication also has an Internet radio station that features six talk shows and dedicates 60 percent of its feed to local content.

Undeniably, the local scene has grown over the past couple of years. But why is it happening now and not in the 1980s or ’90s? Lewis offers a cultural perspective.

“I think this community got hip-hop late. If they get hip-hop late, it’s going to take time. Houston has been having hip-hop there forever,” he said. “I can go to a lot of major cities in the country, and they have had hip-hop radio stations for 20 years, you know, because hip-hop has been out since ’81. ..... And San Antonio didn’t pick up a hip-hop radio station until about seven or eight years ago.”

Regardless, urban music is here now, and the scene is ready to bust at the seams, Jones said.

“In five years, I actually see our urban scene really growing up, basically. Right now, we are in the elementary stages, and we’re learning and we’re figuring out exactly what it takes to get the business done, and by that time we’ll be there. There is only two ways to go. Either we get better, or we get worse,” he said.

By contrast, Fade Dogg offers harsher words and a less hopeful message for the current and future urban music scene in San Antonio. He said until everyone unites behind each other, including the fans showing proper support to the artists, the scene is not likely to grow.

“I f**king step out of Texas, dog, I get so much love. I go to New Mexico, and I’m like Jay-Z,” he said.

After an altercation that slightly altered the 3rd Annual Ozone Awards, Mike Jones, who was involved in the scuffle with fellow Houston rapper, Trae, released a statement today (August 13) explaining and apologizing in regards to what took place before the ceremony commenced on Monday, August 11th.
Jones said of the incident, "First off before I point any fingers, I personally do want to apologize for the incident that happened at the Ozone Awards. I hope you all don't get the wrong impression of me or my city”. Completely oblivious as to what caused the encounter, Jones insists if he had knowledge of any tension between Trae, he would've handled the situation in an entirely different manner, “The incident that I was put in was totally unexpected and totally unprofessional. If I knew this was going to happen at a big event such as the Ozone Awards, first, I would not have brought my mother and second, I would have done everything in my power to prevent it.”
Later in the statement, Jones apologized for leaving the Ozone attendees with a bad impression, but also asserts defending himself was the main priority during the clash, "I am aware of how big this event was for the city of Houston and the entire hip hop community. Please know that I had no intention of tarnishing this great opportunity, nor the experiences of those who participated in it. I apologize once again for everything that happened but I cannot apologize for having to defend myself from someone bringing unexpected or un-called violence to me and my family at any time. I apologize once again and I appreciate your support and understanding” said Jones.
Out of respect for the city of Houston and the award ceremony, Jones apologized to the participants and attendees of the show before presenting an award. The Voice of the Streets, Jones third studio album, is currently in production, but has yet to be tagged with an official release date. "Cutty Buddy", the second single from the project which features Lil Wayne, Twista and T-Pain, was recently serviced to urban radio outlets across the country.

Hip hop may be struggling, but according to AZ, it still growing. “Everything elevates and grows, so at the end of the day it’s growing” says AZ. As one of hip hop’s lyrical legends, Brooklyn native, AZ is positioning himself where he see’s fit. Birthing his career in the early 90’s and residing at several major labels along the way which included, EMI, Motown, and Virgin Records, AZ has kept his presence consistent within the last decade.
While Undeniable, his latest body of work which was released last April via Koch Records, is still sending shockwaves through the hip hop community, AZ stopped by BET.Com to spill the beans on his new controversial mixtape, N.4.L( Ni**az 4 Life), his movie project, Sounds of Wars, which begins production this month, and of course hip hop.
Since AZ insists on blazing his own trail, his latest project, N.4.L., a collaborative effort with Hot 97’s DJ Absolut, may seem like it’s nipping at the heels of Nas’ latest project, Untitled. But, as always, AZ’s critical planning has once again, given the fans exactly what they asked for. “I got a lot of questions about Nas and when we’re getting together for an album so I created something where they could put his Untitled LP together with my joint and use that as an album that may never come out since we’re speaking on the same content.” AZ told BET.Com.
And since Nas already set the stage for the extremely controversial issue, AZ maneuvered his own perspective, but of course under the same spotlight, “What I didn’t wanna do was listen to what he was doing and emulate his path” AZ clarified. “With all the hype going with Obama, Sean Bell, Mike Vick and others, I knew the awareness was already there, so I knew where he was going, but at the end of the day I kept it at my angle.”
Though N.4.L. is at the forefront of AZ’s mental notepad right now, that sure isn’t stopping the independently signed lyricist from scheming on other exciting ventures. “Sounds of Wars”, a movie project that is currently being casted, is set for a November release along with an epic soundtrack to accompany the film. AZ said of the project, “Sound of Wars” is the wars we go through mentally and the decisions we embrace everyday.”
As of late, hip hop’s youngest generation has been receiving some what of a verbal lashing from its elders. First, it was Gza from the Wu-Tang Clan denouncing Soulja Boy’s success and then Ice T’s harsh rhetoric was heard around world during a video entry directed at the youngster. Though the climate and content has altered in various forms, AZ’s views on the current state of hip hop exercise similar sentiments, but in a more civilized and diplomatic manner. “As far as hip hop becoming a business, yea I’m excited about it. But as far as the essence of it, it’s basically non existent and I’m not excited about that because that’s where it originated. It is what it is; you can’t cry about it, you just get in where you fit in.”

DJ Vlad Files $4 Million Lawsuit Against Rick Ross Over Alleged Ozone Awards Beatdown

Vlad claims Ross and his entourage beat him up at the awards show last weekend.

DJ Vlad filed a $4 million dollar lawsuit against Rick Ross in Federal Court in New York on Friday (August 15), claiming that the Miami MC orchestrated a "brutal attack" on Vlad (born Vlad Lyubovny) at the Ozone Awards in Houston last Sunday.
According to a press release from Vlad's attorney, Brian Caplan, the assault and battery lawsuit against Ross (born William Leonard Roberts II) alleges that "Rick Ross orchestrated a brutal attack upon DJ Vlad, carried out at his direction by his accomplices, in retribution for media coverage of Rick Ross' prior life as a correctional officer."
Among the injuries alleged to have been suffered by Vlad in the attack are a cut that required seven stitches below one of his eyes, three facial fractures, a corneal abrasion and possible permanent nerve damage. The suit is seeking $2 million in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages.
Vlad's YouTube channel, VladTV, recently featured an interview with the Clipse in which they discussed the controversy over recent claims about Ross' alleged former life as a corrections officer, which Ross has denied. It also linked to a widely distributed interview with incarcerated drug dealer "Freeway" Ricky Ross — whose name the rapper appropriated as a stage identity — in which Ricky Ross makes light of the MC; the link to the that interview has since been removed.
Prior to the altercation, which was reportedly caught on videotape by a number of bystanders, Vlad told MTV News that Ross had reached out to him recently.
The suit claims that the attack was launched by Ross in an attempt to "stifle [Vlad's] journalistic reporting and freedom of expression." Perhaps further fanning the flames, it portrays Ross as someone who has "painstakingly created his public persona to be that of a major drug dealer and 'gangster,' [but is] in reality a former correctional officer." It depicts the confrontation between the men as a result of Ross' alleged "calculated planning," which included luring DJ Vlad to a meeting "for the purpose of obtaining retribution."
According to the suit, Vlad received a text message from Ross on the afternoon of the Ozone Awards that read, "N----- will learn ... trillaaaa." Vlad had interviewed Ross twice before, which is allegedly how the MC obtained Vlad's phone number. After the DJ inquired about who the text was from, Ross allegedly responded, "Ross ... I'm hearing things."
A short time later, according to the suit, Ross called Vlad and said, "I've been hearing things about me on your Web site. ... We gonna make a story. ... We going to see each other. ... We going to talk. ... Where are you?" Upon learning that both men were in town for the Ozone Awards, Ross allegedly set up a time for the meeting on the second floor of the Hilton Hotel in Houston and arrived accompanied by four other people.
"Following a brief conversation between DJ Vlad and Ross in which Ross said, 'We got beef,' Ross' accomplices, who had surrounded DJ Vlad while he spoke with Ross, proceeded to strike and beat DJ Vlad in Ross' presence and without any protest on Ross' part," the suit says. The men then reportedly fled the scene and left Vlad laying on the ground "bleeding profusely" after one attacker shouted, "Yeah, mother----er, that's what you get."
A spokesperson for Ross had no comment on the suit at press time.

Recently, I had the chance to see one of the premier Tejano bands in San Antonio. While having a business meeting at the Hot Tin Roof this past Tuesday, we were surprised to see and hear Jorge Alejandro y La Paz during Tejano Night. The music was great and the personality of the band was superb. They put on a wonderful show and had the crowd laughing and singing with a great mix of Tejano and old school R&B. Make sure you get a chance to check them out on Tuesday. I’m not sure how long they will be there but it’s a great show and I don’t see why they would leave unless they were to be picked up for a concert tour.

The Passing of a Comedic Icon.

It's been a couple of days since his death and I'm still shock. His death was just out of the blue, much like Tim Russet's (R.I.P.), and it's made me think about life and the legacy we leave behind.

I have been around long enough to say with great confidence that George Carlin is-was-and will be one of the greatest comedians we will ever know. George Carlin went to jail setting standards, and went through life breaking barriers for all of us. Carlin was a humorist, a bibliophile, and a true humanist.

From the kids like mine who grew up watching him on 'Shining Time Station' to the Kevin Smith movie fans who discovered him in 'Dogma', to the fans of his writing (his books were just as funny as his stand-up) to the old farts like me who remember the "Hippy Dippy Weather Man" back in the 60's and have been watching his T.V. specials and going to his concerts ..... we will all miss this extraordinary man.

Chauncey Williams was 22 years old. He was a friend to many and now the many along with his family get to grieve. Why? What the fuk for?

I asked my friends from all parts of town what the fuk is going on. I get many different responses, but one of the answer I get most is ... "It's just the way the streets are."

Fuk that. This isn't South Central. This isn't Compton. This isn't Ghost Town. This isn't Long Beach. This isn't how the streets are ..... this is what they were turned into. This is San Antonio. A city built by immigrants and prostitutes. Gang life was not supposed to happen here in lil ol' Germantown. But it did.

Every week my friends are losing their friends cause someone decided that a shooting was the only alternative. It hurts to see my friends grieve all the time. I am thankful to the many artists out here who don't set trip - they know words are more powerful than a gun.

It's time for more words and fewer guns.

Friday the 13th - (of all days) and R Kelly is FREE!! After six long ass years, R Kelly walked free yesterday. Deliberating for less than a day, jurors in the Chicago courtroom acquitted Kelly on 14 charges of child pornography saying that the man on the 27 minute sex tape was NOT Kelly. Kelly would have gotten up to 15 years in prison man.

Outside the courthouse, the Grammy award-winning singer wiped away tears and hugged his defense lawyers while fans cheered for him. Kelly said nothing at all - he just got into his SUV and jetted out.

This was an amazingly long exhausting trial. Allan Mayer, Kelly's spokesperson, said that Kelly had faith that he would be cleared stating "Robert has said all along that he believes in our system, and he believes in God. He did not expect it to take six and a half years. This has been a terrible ordeal for him and his family." Ya think so Allan???

I am happy for R Kelly. But ..... I still wanna know .... if that wasn't R Kelly's naked ass in that sex tape doing all that nastiness .... then who the fuk was it and why hasn't that cat been arrested???

In just one hour my street went from quiet and calm to fuking choas. That 3 alarm fire all over the news .... its in the apartments across the street from me. About 1:30 I heard the first fire truck roll up, within an hour there were twenty plus fire trucks, five EMS trucks, two cop cars and news trucks everywhere.

The whole building looks trashed. If it isn't burned it is hella smoke damaged.

It does not appear anyone that anyone was injured.

It's a tiny device that can keep drunk drivers off the streets.

The device is called the "BreathScan", and one a local business is now selling them inside their new bar.

At the Boston Pub, the breathalyzer sits next to the cigarettes. The bar, which is set to open this weekend, is located right near U.T.S.A. and is sure to see it's share of students.

"That's the first time I've every heard of a vending machine giving out breathalyzers," said U.T.S.A. freshman Mohammad Ali. "I'd like soda from my vending machine. But a breathalyzer? I guess that's new, but it might catch on."

So, if you're having a few too many, you can easily find out.

"It's a warning sign for them that 'hey you know, I'm getting close. I need to stop'," said bartender Jessica Vaught.

The two breath scans in the pack will cost you $7.

"I would say that that's a good thing, to make sure that nobody is driving under the influence," said U.T.S.A. junior Sobe Qazi. "Cause, obviously, this is a college campus, and people do that all the time."

After you snap the tube and blow into it, the color change lets you know whether or not you're drunk.

"I would use it," Ali said. "I wouldn't want to risk my life or any of my friends life. And you know, college students always need a designated driver."

Although police don't endorse any type of breathalyzer, they do say anything that could stop a D.W.I. is welcomed.

Owners of the Boston Pub also plan on selling the breathalyzers at their two other bars in San Antonio.
The Boston Pub will also offer designated drivers complimentary non-alcoholic drinks. The bar is located at 8202 N.W. Loop 1604 West (at Hausman).

Two Busted With A Fist Sized Ball Of White Early Wed. Morning

12:30 am Wednesday April 16th

Two males were pulled over, chased on foot, then arrested and taken into custody in the Camino Real apartments ..... where they lived.

No names are being released as yet, but two males, a white male and a black male both in their early twenties were taken into custody after fleeing when pulled over S.A.P.D. They were just turning in to the Camino Real apartments on Sir Winston off Blanco Road, where they lived. The commotion of several people running and yelling through the parking lot brought people out of their homes. One witness, who recognized two of the officers, watched the search of the Burgundy 96/97 Buick Roadmaster through his binoculars.

The search turned up a two-fisted sized ball of white and a big bank roll.

Another witness said he saw the black male swallow a hand full of tiny packets then a few minutes later throw them up. He and another witness said the male appeared to be very "dazed" after the chase and wondered if the dazed look and off balance walking was from the drugs.

Witnesses also said this was the second large bust inside this apartment complex in the last 24 hours.

Steve Singer, one of the founding members of the Texas Music Coalition (TMC), passed away April 8, 2008. Steve served as chair of the steering committee that brought TMC into being, previously having been the last president of the San Antonio chapter of the old Texas Music Association. He will be remembered as the creator of the Wiley Awards, which TMC originally co-sponsored. A gifted songwriter, he released a CD of his songs (which he also sang) in August 2007 -- Thin Ice. Services were held this past Sunday.

The leader of a local rap group is behind bars this morning on drug charges following a drug bust at his North Side apartment overnight.

Personnel of the Bexar County Sheriff's Narcotics Division arrested Billy King and Nichol Lewis on drug charges early Tuesday morning. They are being held in lieu of bonds that total more than $30,000.

According to deputies, King is a member of a local rap group called the Bexar County Boys. Investigators believe their music may be financed illegally.

"We believe they fund that stuff through the sale of illegal narcotics," said BCSO Lt. Mike Pesses.

Pesses says King, 24, and others have been under surveillance on suspicion of dealing ecstasy. Agents say they found 1,300 pills of the drug during the raid in the 2600 block of N. E. Loop 410. The street value for the drugs is $32,000, said Pesses.

A large bag of marijuana, $4,000 in cash, a .40 caliber weapon, a scale, and Bexar County Boys compact discs were also found in the apartment.

Pesses said he believes more arrests could be forthcoming.

A 60-inch flat screen television, video games systems, and other electronics were also seized from the apartment because investigators believe they were purchased with drug money.

I spoke with LBZ this afternoon about the loss of his best friend and business partner Mike T. Here is what LBZ had to say...

"Shit .. my nigga Mike T. of Barre None Ent., he was one of the coolest people out here in the Tone. He was a player type of dude. He would chill, enjoy his kids and make music ... that's all he wanted to do cause that's what made him happy. If I ever needed anything, he was right there. I lost more than just a rapping partner .... Mike was my best friend."

Mike T. had just turned 31. He died young, way too young.

"This is the worst hurt I have ever been through. This just wasn't supposed to happen." Beezy sadly said.

"Mike was in the Military .. he fought for his Country as well as make music. He was in Colorado with Royal Click before he came to 210. He made CDs in Bosnia, Colorado and San Antonio. We made three mix-tape albums together, and I will be releasing the one we were just finishing which will be called "Pyrex Dreams" in honor of the album he was going to release with that name this year."

"Mike and I were like two of a kind .... and he believed in me with no doubt in his mind, he would say I am the best in San Antonio. And to me .... he was the best. Mike T. is the reason why I grind so hard ... he is the inspiration that makes me want to be a better artist. He was one of the greatest rappers to walk the streets of San Antonio to me. Many will tell you that too. He and I had a lot of plans and a lot of dreams together. "

"He liked all types of music too .. there was no barrier ... we listened to everything together. Our main influences were S.U.C., UGK, Scarface and 8ball. It is sad. We would play 8Box all day, chill, blow, he was the best. My nigga didn't deserve this. He didn't bother anyone. He never hurt anyone. I can't even believe my nigga is gone. And now, he leaves behind a son and daughter that I will pick up that slack and help to take care of cause his family is my family too"

"THINK about what you are gonna do BEFORE you do it man. Think about what CAN happen. You have to live life to the fullest. Tell your friends that you love them cause it's the little everyday things you are gonna miss the most when they are gone. So do it .. don't be afraid to tell them how you feel."

Mandela appeared midway through Saturday night's show, which saw a mix of international and national artists perform in Johannesburg for the first time under the 46664 banner, which takes its name from Mandela's prison number during his time incarcerated on Robben Island. The event uses music to raise funds for key HIV/AID-related projects in sub-Saharan Africa.

*The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) in Montclair, NJ will present a conversation with Reginald Hudlin on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. as part of the Creating Art: Conversations with African American Artists series. Hudlin, president of Black Entertainment Television and a comic book writer for Marvel’s Black Panther and Spider-man series, will discuss the African American presence in comics – both behind the scenes as creators and in the pages themselves as characters. The lecture, free to the public, will be followed by a Q&A with the audience and a reception. The Montclair Art Museum is located at 3 South Mountain Ave.. *Spike Lee has been awarded the Wexner Center for the Arts prize by its International Arts Advisory Council. Lee will come to Columbus Feb. 11-12 to accept the $50,000 award, which honors a contemporary artist in any field whose work has been original, influential and challenging. The controversial filmmaker's more than 20-year career includes the Oscar-nominated "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X" and last year's Emmy-winning TV miniseries on Hurricane Katrina, "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts." The last Wexner Center for the Arts was given out in 2006 to choreographer Bill T. Jones.
